If you’re like most of my clients, you carefully read the labels at the grocery store. A good thing, for sure.
But do you also read the labels on your skincare products?
You could be exposing yourself to hundreds of questionable chemicals each and every day through the use of
- soap or body wash
- shampoo and conditioner
- makeup
- facial cleansers
- lotions and moisturizers
- deodorant

Most cosmetics companies aren’t really looking out for your long-term health. And many are good at creating products that make your skin look good… at least for awhile.
But at what cost?
Some of these chemicals are pretty harsh and can cause allergies, dryness, or irritation. Some can clog your pores and lead to breakouts. Others are toxic enough that they can eventually cause problems for your internal organs and glands. That’s why I say,
“Don’t put anything on your skin that you’re not willing to eat.”
Reading skincare ingredients can be tricky. I can’t even pronounce some of the words on those labels. But there are three biggies that are easy to recognize:
- sodium laurel sulphates
- parabens
- fragrances
Switching to a safer natural and organic brand doesn’t mean you have to give up great-looking and great-feeling skin. On the contrary!
There are many wonderful ingredients that are natural, safe, effective, and have been used and proven over the centuries. I imagine that people have always wanted to be beautiful, and many did what they could to enhance that beauty.
I listed three nasty ingredients, so I’ll also give you three of the “good guys” to balance things out.
- Avocado oil – Avocados are great for making guacamole, and avocado oil is also very protective for skin. Not only does it leave your skin feeling soft, it helps to reverse some of the signs of aging, like sun spots and fine lines. It works by increasing collagen production deep in your skin tissue.
- Shea butter – Made from the oil of Shea nuts, this moisturizer has long been used to protect and heal damaged skin. It reduces wrinkling, strengthens the structure of your skin, and brings a youthful glow.
- Manuka honey – Honey itself is a good moisturizer, and Manuka is a very special honey. It’s so effective at stimulating healing that the FDA approved it in 2007 for treating wounds and skin ulcers. It’s often recommended to be used as a facial cleansing mask in troublesome acne cases. Think what it could do for YOUR skin…
You don’t have to buy products with harsh chemical ingredients just because you want to have nice skin. There are kinder and gentler skincare products on the market. You just have to know where to look.
